This Program is Currently Not Running
Hockey isn’t just a game in this community — it’s an identity. The Challenger Hockey League exists so that every kid who loves the sport gets to be part of it, regardless of ability. No try-outs. No cuts. Just hockey.
Since 2017, Challenger Sports has partnered with the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club to bring structured, hockey-centred coaching and skills development to athletes with disabilities and special needs. The Rangers aren’t just a venue partner — they’ve opened their club, their dressing rooms, and their culture to our athletes. Challenger Hockey players are Rangers players.

What the Program Looks Like
Each session is structured to give athletes a complete hockey experience — not a stripped-down version of the sport, but the real thing adapted for every skill level. A typical session includes:
- A warm-up skate to get everyone comfortable on the ice
- Skating skills and edge work, scaled to each athlete’s level
- Puck-handling drills and shooting practice
- Small-area games and scrimmages that emphasize fun, teamwork, and movement
- A cool-down and team huddle to close out the session
Athletes are paired with volunteer buddies who skate alongside them throughout the session, providing hands-on support, encouragement, and safety. Our coaches and the Oakville Rangers staff work together to run a structured, purposeful session every week.
The Oakville Rangers Partnership
When Challenger Sports and the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club joined forces in 2017, the goal was straightforward: give these athletes a hockey home. Not a side program or a charity event but a real club they belong to.
What that means in practice:
- Challenger Hockey players wear Oakville Rangers jerseys and are considered full members of the club
- Athletes have access to proper dressing room facilities and the full arena environment
- Rangers coaching staff contribute expertise to session planning and delivery
- The partnership signals to athletes and families that they are valued members of the broader hockey community — not guests, but teammates
This model has helped grow interest in special needs hockey across the region and has become a blueprint for what inclusive sport partnership can look like.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child need to know how to skate?
Not at all. We have athletes at every level, including complete beginners. Volunteer buddies provide hands-on support on the ice, and our coaching staff are experienced at working with skaters who are just getting started. The most important thing is wanting to be there.
What if my child has high support needs?
We welcome athletes with a wide range of support needs. Please reach out before your first session so we can talk through your child’s needs and make sure we have the right support in place. The more we know ahead of time, the better the experience will be for your child and our team.
Can parents or caregivers come on the ice?
Yes, especially for athletes who are new to the program or who benefit from having a familiar person nearby. We encourage families to be as involved as feels right. Over time, many athletes gain enough confidence that they prefer to participate independently, which is always a milestone worth celebrating.
Is the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex accessible?
Yes. The complex has accessible parking, accessible entrances, and facilities suitable for athletes and families with mobility needs. If you have specific accessibility questions, contact us and we can confirm the details relevant to your situation.
How is this different from the Skating & Shinny program?
The Skating & Shinny program (held at the Milton Sports Centre on Sunday afternoons) is a free, drop-in style session focused on recreational skating and casual shinny hockey — great for families and newer skaters. The Challenger Hockey League is a structured, coached program with a set schedule, skills development focus, and a formal partnership with the Oakville Rangers. Both are free. Both are welcoming. They serve slightly different needs — and some athletes do both.
